What is a repatriation from abroad?
Sometimes unforeseen things happen on holiday. An accident or an illness makes an examination by a local doctor necessary, who will then decide how to proceed. If a patient has to cut their holiday short but cannot make the journey back on their own, the repatriation service comes into play. A private medical repatriation transport then provides not only the transport but also optimal medical care on the way home.
The doctor decides whether the patient can travel alone or has to be transported by professionals. Health insurance distinguishes between necessary and medically sensible repatriation transports.
Who pays for a repatriation from abroad?
Statutory health insurance only reimburses the costs for absolutely necessary transports, for example when required treatment cannot be carried out in the holiday country. If, however, it is a medically sensible but not strictly necessary repatriation transport, you can only expect the costs to be covered if you have taken out a policy for a special travel health insurance.
